Adult education is the practice of equipping adult students with the necessary education. This can be in the form of upgrading skills, learning a totally new skill or learning basic education such as mathematics, writing or reading.

The adult education teachers have the job of dealing with adult students who have been working in careers which do not require formal academic education or failed to complete primary or high school education. Like the traditional teaching job, the adult educating teachers teach their lessons using well planned schemes of work. They also serve as instructors, motivators and mentors. They have the special duty to make the adult students feel at ease in a classroom setting. They use group work activities, lectures, practical and hands-on methodologies as well as individual tasks.

To become an adult educator, one needs qualifications which depend on the kind of course or program they will be teaching. To reach a program like remedial academic topics in college, one requires to have undergone a masters degree or higher. To teach less taxing skill adult courses like woodworking, computers and first aid, the instructor requires having a bachelor’s degree, a professional certificate or an associate degree.

A typical job description of an adult educator’s job involves but not limited to tasks of encouraging class participation, developing student’s confidence, earning student’s trust for maximum exchange of knowledge, and providing constructive feedback and answering the questions that the students may have adequately. The tutor also has the duty to use the student’s life experiences to ensure the class is lively and to make the lessons relevant. In addition, he has to establish a comfortable and encouraging learning environment for his class to make learning effective.
