The duty of providing access to basic education in India has been taken up by the Government. To this end, the state has put in place various measures of accessing the basic education to every cadre of students in the country.

Among these categories are the students who need special education. Children who are mentally or physically handicapped also need education so that they can engage in activities that improve the quality of their lives. India has made large strides in the special education field particularly in the disability rehabilitation sector.

Jobs in special education are available in national institutions that cater for education of disabled persons. These institutions are the National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, National Institute for Hearing Handicapped, National Institute for Visually Handicapped persons and National Institution for Mentally Handicapped persons. Other Government run institutions include The Institution for Physically Handicapped Persons and the Institute for Rehabilitation, Training and Research.

Additionally, the Indian Government instituted the District Rehabilitation Centers or the DRC’s. To effectively work in the special education sector in India, one needs to have a diploma in the relevant field. Some institutes will require the candidate to have a bachelor’s degree in education. One would have a competitive advantage if they have training from one of the four regional rehabilitation training centers. These courses and trainings are coordinated and regulated by the Rehabilitation Council of India which is a law making body that falls under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The pay for people in these jobs is average as compared to normal teaching and instructional jobs. However, there are enormous benefits for the community generally because handicapped children can live out full and quality lives when they grow up to be adults. All this is through the dedicated people taking up jobs in the special education sectors in India.
